Senate approves $2.36 trillion budget resolution

WASHINGTON, March 12 (UPI) -- Senate Republicans pushed a $2.36 trillion 2005 budget resolution through to passage early Friday on largely partisan lines.

The measure provides for lower spending and tax cuts than requested by the White House but still meets many of the funding goals of the Bush administration

GOP leaders were successful in their effort to keep military spending intact as deficit hawks moved to cut billions of dollars from the Pentagon's budget request.

Senate Democrats failed to gain approval Thursday on a series of amendments to increase spending on homeland security, education and veterans programs by closing some corporate tax loopholes and increasing taxes on the wealthy.

Nevertheless, the Senate did include a Democrat-backed provision that would require appropriators to pay for all new tax and spending initiatives in the final budget.

Critics of the spending plan say despite the lower funding, the measure would not result in the kinds of deficit savings proponents claim, increasing deficits instead.

The House is scheduled to take up its own budget resolution next week and will also consider less extensive pay-as-you-go regulations.
