I know I sound silly to all the policy wonks, but I do not think that self (national) interest and doing the right thing are incompatible.

It can be argued to dooms day whether we should have gotten rid of Saddam in this way or not, but we did. We have to follow through. We can't risk letting Iraq go into chaos and then come out with a government worse than Saddam's - which is a very distinct possiblity.

Enlightened self interst sounds trite and so wishy washy. But is that that much worse than all the horrible ideas floating around.

Is an exit strategy based on enlightened self interest so much more difficult to execute than some shallow strategy that is based on a thuggish morality (not having any specific thuggishness in mind)?
