Karen, there are different types of "news reports," as we all can see. One reporter might just say : Dick Clarke said "xxx" and said "yyyyyy". Specifically, Clarke seems to be saying things that aren't "direct quotes", but general innuendo.

My question was: "Did the media ask for any proof?" In other words, is there any meeting minutes from any of the meetings from which he is drawing his recollections?

How do we know that Clarke is telling the truth? Especially when today a person seeming to be about his same level (Miller???) DIDN'T recall things to be as Dick Clarke thinks he remembers.

Will the media have articles about those who disagree with Clarke? Will those articles be on page 1? Or IF there are any articles showing the disagreements on content....will those articles be buried on the side of section A page 19, etc?

A kidnapping is another story. If there was one, it is important to report it. If there was one and it turns out not to be a kidnapping, but a falsehood, then the person telling a falsehood is usually dealt with by the law.

If someone write a book, and says things by innuendo that have the potential to damage a public figure, does anything happen to the person who said those things?

It's one thing to report "news".....(as in train wreck). It's another thing to report "opinion" without proof of fact.
