Eliminating Kodak, International Paper, and AT&T from the Dow Jones Industrial Average is interesting and unusual for several reasons. Most of the time a stock is removed because of a merger. Rarely is it removed because it's a dog. Now we have three dogs being removed in favor of some new entries that may have a better chance of becoming the cat's meow. What a way to boost the DJIA!

Note that if the DJIA performs better for the rest of the year, it may have little to do with the economy in general but a lot to do with the fortunes of the 30 component stocks.

The decision to place SanDisk in a major index might reflect the same reasoning.
