Show us the jobs
Posted by Evan on April 2, 2004 @ 4:37PM

2.9 million jobs lost (worst since the Great Depression), 14.7 million unemployed, underemployed or given up looking, 43 consecutive months of manufacturing job loss; bad as they are, they're just numbers. But the new one, '51,' may prove to be the straw. That's the number of Americans (one per state + DC) participating in the AFL-CIO's 'Show Us the Jobs' tour that rolled into DC this week after criss-crossing middle America.

The tour was intended to draw attention to the personal side of the numbers game. Participants were encouraged to tell their stories and the stories of the regions they represent.

A Kentucky woman's story:

"My husband was forced into retirement from another plant... I expected to travel the country when I retired, but instead we barely make ends meet...I’m worried about what we’ll do when our strength fails. I can’t cut firewood forever...I began to worry about my son. He works at a steel mill and could face the same situation any time. His future is as insecure as mine is...A lot of other people are struggling as well. Businesses have closed, the schools are hurting and the city laid off employees...I fear that without the manufacturing base, this country will enter the worst depression yet. It’s very depressing to watch the blue collar disappear.."
And, like any respectable road trip, there's a memento: A genuine 'Show Us the Jobs' TV ad responding to some of Bush's optimistic SOTU claims about 'job growth' and the 'strong' economy.
