A search for "Clarke apology" yields dozens of finds at SI alone

Thanks for the list. I went through the posts but didn't find anything on point. There were several that mentioned that the families were pleased with the apology. Of course, we've learned that it's hard to get a handle on what the families are really thinking and what advocates allegedly representing the families are pushing, but one would imagine that some of the families at least were pleased to hear an apology.

What none of the posts addressed, though, was the poll question of whether the apology was a good thing for the families. I do not know the answer to that. An apology from bin Laden surely would be a good thing. An apology from anyone would feel good, but I don't know that it would be constructive in the long term. Maybe it takes a shrink to evaluate that.

I am wary of expectations that public servants apologize whenever there is a bad outcome. How helpful is it to a youngster who doesn't get to go to college because his state had budget problems and had to raise tuition to have an official apologize and say the state let the kid down? Or his brother dies from a stray bullet in a gang gunfight to have the police apologize and say the government let him down. Or if the kid's brother dies because a cure has not yet been found for cancer? It seems to me that expressions of sympathy are appropriate and helpful but I don't know about apologies.
