The sound of her own scream awakened Muffy. It had all been a dream!

Or

had

it?

Yes, she had been asleep, and yes, the sound of her scream had awakened her. But it would not have been atypical for Muffy, who suffered not only from Attention Deficit Disorder but narcolepsy, to have fallen asleep even at at time when possibly her very life, and most definitely her freedom, were genuinely at risk.

As the ambulance drew closer to the bright sign, Muffy's eyelids drooped again over her blue eyeballs (her eyeballs weren't entirely blue, of course; there was a lot of white to them but most of the white component was hidden in the socket of her eye, and there was a black dot of variable size in the exact center of the blue part); the oozing of the luminosity from 'neath her eyes slowed; and the sound of her deep, guttural breathing and thunderous snoring muffled the shriek of the siren being utilized by the driver to signal the staff of the arrival of a new and unusually fetching inmate at the Outdated Institution for Mental Diseases of the Exceedingly Dense, Doltish & Dull.
