I see no difference between the Senator from ADM and the Senator from the AFL-CIO.

Neither do I, but the attributes of industry are neither here nor there when it comes to assessing the worth of unions any more that the attributes of roses or porcupines are relevant to the value of unions.

Unions de-certify.

Sure they do. When hell freezes over.

They compete - they raid each other. Memberships switch to other unions.<

Which only changes the name on the door.

Industries and businesses disappear and so does the union membership in them.

This is the only practical way to get rid of a union once established.

Many large non-union companies put in place the same sorts of structures, not only because they keep unions out, but because they are cost effective.

Exactly. And "as a business person" surely you would prefer to have a set of personnel policies developed by you, in consultation with your employees as you see fit, rather than one that you negotiate with a third party with its own agenda, with interests other than yours and those of your company, and also interests other than those of your employees, and, to top it off, to do so under the umbrella of a bunch of laws that limit your flexibility. No sane business person gives up so much control voluntarily.

(And bear in mind not all ownership and management is benevolent, and sometimes is downright malicious).

Yeah, and bear in mind that not all union leadership is competent or benevolent.

Personally, I became sick to death of trying to work the union reps to do right by the employees when they were either too stupid or too self serving to do so. It would have been much more efficient to skip the middleman.

Unions are a logical outcome of modern society which believes in the primacy of self rule and reason.

I don't question the basis for the rise of unions. What I argued is that unions have become so full of themselves that they are no longer the solution but rather part of the problem. We need to move on to the post-union workplace.
