The whole thing that gets missed in these discussions of economics is the impact of the bursting of the internet bubble. The market was a tulip type mania. It could not last - and it did not last. Many people were severely hurt financially - they thought they had a free lunch - of course they did not. Then came 9/11 - again - the travel industry was trashed. The fact that we only had a mild recession instead of depression is remarkable.

Going forward there is no honest discussion from the left or right on how to solve the long term financial problems. When one of the candidates tells how they are going to solve SS - and all of the radical changes that will be required - then we will have an honest candidate - and a defeated one.
