Well, that's of course, the way management always presents these cases but...

Sometimes it's just a guise, but sometimes it's real. In these days of globalization, I suspect it has a basis in reality more often than not. In any event, the unions would posture as though it were a guise even it it weren't so that's a wash IMO. They both have their little dances to do. The system plays the inevitable tune.

Gotta have unions to protect worker rights.

You presented some legitimate problems but you haven't made the argument that the union is the best tool for solving them. I would suggest that regulation is a better approach. So is publicity if the company has any prominence to protect. The main thing you get from the union is a ready focal point to initiate regulation or publicity. But the union brings a lot of baggage to that particular table including a deep rut. A few sharp employees or an employee ombudsman interest group could do the job themselves.
