Oh jeez, I can see you're making an effort to frame an honest claim but just can't do it. Clarke DIDN'T say Andy Card or the State Dept called him and TOLD him ...

He said someone passed along the Saudi embassy request. He said he didn't remember who. He said it could have been someone at the WH or State. OTOH since he can't remember it could have been the Saudi ambassador himself for all we know. Frankly, given the problem of clientitis among long-term State Dept employees, it sounds like that State would be a very reasonable possibility.

But clearly no one ordered Clarke to let the bin Ladin's go. Because if they had, presumably Clarke wouldn't have checked with the FBI before giving the go ahead.
