I realize this is an intellectual discussion that I've jumped in to the middle of, but:

All that's in the past.

Deterrence and containment did keep us out of nuclear war, to be sure, but do you recall pacifists' opinions of the Mutually Assured Destruction policy? Do you recall Slim Pickens riding the bomb in Dr. Strangelove? Who's to say some OTHER factor like Slim would not intervene?

Who's to say that Marxists would have permitted an offer of trade and support against Chinese domination? Under that scenario, would China have "evolved" away from Marxism? Maybe not. Maybe they would have evolved into Dr. Strangelove, without the benefit of a free society to ameliorate him.

Your speculations do not account for human nature very well. Nor of free will.
