Lying is lying, and covering up is covering up. "I didn't really break it" is a lie. Burying it in the back yard is covering up. Both are wrong in your example, but they are different wrongs.

It's a bad idea to try to erase the distinctions in our language. If your apparent belief that omitting unfavorable facts is the same as lying were to prevail in the legal world, that would mean that you could be convicted of perjury for failing to volunteer incriminating facts.
