Let me emphasize the fact that until at least 22 to 23 weeks of pregnancy, fetuses do not have a functioning neural apparatus. The brain is unequipped for cognition. It almost certainly cannot receive pain signals. This latter is controversial, since there are reflex reactions to stimuli (drawing away) somewhat earlier. They resemble the patellar reflex, with which my knee would jerk when tapped even should I go into a coma and feel nothing. Thus the exact gestational age at which pain can be registered is much debated among scientists, but it is not early. Cognition at the level of a newborn requires yet another jump in fetal maturation.
