A blown up picture might give a misleading impression. (You described the fetus as the size of your hand, and I found that impression of yours puzzling, since at three months it would weigh approximately one ounce, and I wonder if the picture you have seen was not to scale, leading you to believe the one ounce fetus was the size of your hand.)
Possibly the fetus was the size of your hand, but the pregnancy was at a later stage than you remember.
I'm very sorry that your sister's miscarriage has been so terrible for her, Ryan. I had a distressing miscarriage, too, of a planned and very desired pregnancy, though it was at 6 weeks. The embryo at that stage appeared, to the naked eye, as a blood clot containing bits of fat and gristle.
