Tomcat -

don't know the die sizes off hand, but I didn't think there was much difference between Prescott and the 90 nm Athlon 64s. I think Intel is currently experiencing more process problems than AMD.

Opteron's current die size is 193mm2 and Prescott's is 112mm2. I believe A64 on 90nm will be smaller but when it ships is anybody's guess. By then Prescott will undergo a shrink so they'll probably be close to the same. You think Intel has more process problems than AMD and I think exactly the opposite. Intel will probably be commenting on their Prescott volumes in about 10 days. We'll see what they say.

Where can I buy one? [IA32e]

Intel said they will be available in Q2.

In the past I don't think AMD had any presence in the server space. Today HP, SUN and IBM are shipping Opteron servers. AMD's presence in the notebook space has never been better with HP and emachines as OEMs not to mention Acer, Fujitsu, Voodoo and others. AMD has also kept competitive in the desktop space. They still need to work on commercial wins though.

All true. Let's see if it translates into sustainable profits.

"If you want to think of Intel now as the second source then I guess that's ok.." I never said this.

I know you didn't. I offered it up. AMD came up with it first and Intel followed. I give AMD their due. It's just that being first doesn't count for anything except bragging rights. That means a lot here but not on Wall Street. Making money is all that counts and with competition AMD's greatest hopes have become their worst nightmare. Price competition from the world's low cost producer.

As far as processor performance goes I don't think Intel has much if any advantage over AMD. They are as close as they have ever been. And don't bet that AMD is resting on its laurels just as I am sure that Intel isn't either. I believe that AMD is just getting started and will continue to take market share and increase profitability. At least I am betting on it with my AMD shares.

I agree they are very evenly matched with AMD having a slight edge on the desktop and very nearly neck and neck up to 4-way where I still think Opteron will choke above that due to the hops needed to maintain cache coherency.

It's possible I'm wrong but that's the way it looks to me.

Good luck to you too!
