we are not fighting the Iraqi street, we are fighting the remnants of the Saddam Hussein Republican Guard, the hard core Sunni followers of Saddam and his tribe and some Al Quida and other professional types. the street does get worked up as seen by news coverage ie Fallujha but that is not typical of the whole of Iraq. I agree that we cannot remain an occupier indefinately, it will not work. you say ""It's even more true when the most powerful political and social force in the country are the clerics of a radical religion and they won't accept a figurehead secular government unless they can pull the strings. Establishing a puppet government won't fool anybody and won't make a difference on June 30th or afterwards."" I agree with this statement and it is at the crux of the entire Middle East problem.
