tgp, "Yeah, well, I was irked."

:)

Something I understand. And I wasn't meaning your posting as the [anti]FUD.

re: "Intel's .13 10% die shrink came with a whole new layout. They may have to do that again, RSN....But I think Intel's .09 is in real trouble and that their year end '03 accounting for it was cooked."

A revised layout makes sense if it can result in a 10% smaller die and potential more extensible performance. Intel's .09 seems 'ok' to me but leaves a lot of room for improvement - like AMD's TBred A which you reference. It works but doesn't bring much new to the table in terms of net performance.

I don't think Intel's cooking was inappropriate but I also don't imagine I understand it. I thought it was reasonably presented and IIRC they noted it as an element in the Gross Margin specifically so that the Gross Margin might be understood to have had a one-time bump. However, it doesn't seem to correspond to a lot of product in the market from observations posted here and elsewhere.

If there truly something inappropriate in their accounting in this respect I would think someone would have clearly investigated it -- not everyone has a vested interest in Intel. I know Petz (?) posted some exploration but I still felt it was lacking in accounting context which I would perhaps only recognize me if it hit me in the head and was wearing a name tag.
