THE CONUNDRUM OF HUMAN IGNORANCE AND TRIBAL LOYALTY
Dr. Sennett,
Re: I can understand that the US doesn't give a damn about polluting Bosnia or Iraq or anywhere else
On the contrary, you are not nearly evil enough in your calculations. As you may be aware, the population of Iraq is now on the order of 25 million people. Most of them under the age of 20. These are people who will have a claim on Iraq's resources for a long time, if they survive. So the plan to toxify the environment with hideous carcinogenic agents has a fine logic to it. The corporations who are most responsible for the generations of birth defects, shorted and brutish lives and degradation of an enemy are perfectly happy to poison the environment of Iraq. The oil is destined for Western economies. The water is destined for Israel, and the Turks who run the South-East Anatolian Project. The Iraqi people are both extraneous and troublesome to the development of Iraq's resources. Therefore, they are to be destroyed by pestilence, poisons, starvation, developed drought and medical devastation. Nothing could be more logical for the corporations. Genocide is the goal in Iraq. The destruction of the local population so that they can't complain about the theft of their resources. We have entered the first Resource War of the 21st Century.
*** Re: what I can't understand is why they don't give a damn about the American soldiers.
Historically, the elites in America have never given a damn about the soldiers who fight our wars. The anomaly was the FDR influenced generosity which followed the Second World War. That is the only example of decency on the part of our government in the treatment of veterans. Other than that, it is a history of truly back-stabbing, tawdry relations.
In fact, the founding of the financial markets under the buttonwood tree on Wall Street in 1792 was based on a bunch of unscrupulous connivers cheating the veterans of the Revolutionary War out of their pensions.

*** Re: Indeed, when I think about how little the US government cares about Americans (and even less about anyone else, of course) I am always amazed at the power of brain-washing.
So am I. That's why I constantly keep current with the fabulous fog-cutter called PR Watch: prwatch.org
But, you don't understand the nature of government in the U.S. Its one and only goal is to serve its corporate masters. Once you understand that, every thing else about its cruelty, lack of honesty and disdain for humans makes perfect sense.
