Actually, Paul was the Libertarian candidate for president in 1988.

I don't think that he expected to win then, so whether he would be interested in actually holding the office is a good question. I imagine most presidential candidates don't actually expect to win (like Dean), and third party candidates seem to mostly just try to advance the party's agenda. Paul's definitely a Libertarian at heart, although he runs for his congressional seat as a Republican.

Paul wouldn't be interested in McCain or Kerry as a matter of principle, and they wouldn't be interested in him because he's too politically incorrect.
