There is a big meeting, this week, with the ANSI forum, and they are
going to decide if DMT is going to stay as the industry standard. The
forum spent a lot of time and efforts establishing this standard, and
changing direction will cause a big delay and confusion where the industry
would go. If you have one standard, you will solve many undesirable
problems in the future, and establish a path for the future. I see
this argument DMT vs. CAP as compression to the cable TV modem modulation
scheme: QAM256(Motorola, SFA, Comstream, Broadcom...)
vs 16VSB (from Zenith), and we all know that QAM has been accepted as
the standard.

As U know, AMATI has the patent on this modulation scheme. I personally
believe that the forum will support this standard against CAP, however,
this does not mean that the CAP technology will go away but continue
the field trail to show its existent and advantage!.
Motorola is a big support of the DMT standard, and when they push something
they push it all the way till the end. In the near future, we will see
a price drop of both CAP and DMT, and the winner will be the cheaper
and better one. Aware Inc. and AMATI are already waking with Motorola
On VLSI solution.
