I brought up Kennedy yesterday in an admittedly provocative way. His recent charge that Iraq is "Bush's VietNam" ( canoe.ca ) was still reverberating as I read in your post

Immediately, I had a deja vu flashback to Nixon and Cambodia ( americanrhetoric.com ). Some things are the same, and some different - history rhyming. Like Cambodia, I suspect an invasion of Pakistan will destabilize that country, and be looked back as a grave error. Unlike April of 1970, when Nixon made his announcement, there is no strong anti-war movement in this country now. The Cambodia decision led to demonstrations at places like Kent State. That, coupled with the flare-up at Jackson State in Mississippi, caused one of the largest eruptions of protest this country has ever seen. I recall watching Cronkite display a map of the US with the states colored that had had demonstrations that day. All were colored except the "spine" states in the middle of the country, from North Dakota down to Texas.

'Twould be nice to see a similar map announcing Bush's defeat come November. Reprehensibly, I also recall the election in '72.
