This Economy, and This Society are on the Cusp

of deciding now whether we tip more fully towards Inflation or Deflation. Both are with us. Both are here, right now. But I always try to remind myself that Economics is a Social Science--for a reason.

The reason is that despite how many factors out of our control are "driving" a current trend--these factors, IMO, remain foundational. Not fundamental.

We've got all the foundational components here for a terrible deflationary spiral or a real inflationary panic. What's more fundamental however is human behaviour--which is driven by perceptions.

We are AT that cusp now, IMO, where it is human perception that will drive the behavior that will trigger the foundational inflation, and deflation.

Something I like about Roach is that he always reminds us of the importance of shocks to the system. The question going forward is: what are people going to "decide" about what is happening?

I think those decisions are always happening but we are reaching a major intersection here. The Bloomberg survey which showed new, fresh concern about Inflation is a real warning. It's a warning about what people may do.

It's time to ask "less" about what is happening foundationally in the global economy, and ask "more" about the reaction.
