If Americans have changed so much that we will not fight to defend ourselves or to liberate an oppressed people, when we have the greatest advantage, we are doomed as a society.

If Americans believe that they are fighting to defend themselves or to liberate the oppressed, they will fight. The problem in this case is that a large and growing number of Americans no longer believe that we are now fighting to achieve these goals. The Administration has not argued its case in a terribly convincing fashion, and there have been some real bonehead maneuvers. The mass of no-bid contracts bestowed on HAL, for example, was just blind idiocy, and played straight into the hands of foreign and domestic opponents of the Iraq action. There are plenty of other American companies that are perfectly capable of doing this kind of work. HAL in general and KBR in particular have become quite notorious for financial hijinks and massive cost overruns. I actually don't believe, personally, that significant back-office skullduggery was involved in the selection, but I can't for the life of me understand why they would take actions that seem designed to promote the image of the cigar-chomping corrupt politician slipping sweet deals to favored corporations.

More stupidity than corruption, in my mind, but I'm not sure stupidity is any better than corruption.
