<What fixed the problem was me changing the operating system from Win98 to WinXP>

Isn't Microsoft great? [Not being disloyal to QUALCOMM, my one true love]. I like Windows XP. It makes life so easy and enables so much. Hooray for $ill Gates and co.

Meanwhile, here's the latest which everyone should download: skype.com It's free voice over internet protocol. It's high quality, though I've found a few glitches depending on the equipment and so on that people have.

Skype has now got a thin client [I think that's the jargon] using Microsoft PocketPC software which enables
an abbreviated version of Skype to provide mobile phone calls.

Subscribers will be able to use their WiFi-enabled phones or iPAQs/PDAs to deliver calls for only the data charges by their service providers. RoamAD and other WiFi providers will get a huge push from the voice killer app. Cellphones are fine, but expensive, all too often. Not many people have the $50 a month Cricket Communications all-you-can-eat, anywhere in the USA [contiguous states], service available in their home city. That works out to about 5c a minute on average [1000 minutes a month being typical use].

Within a WiFi service provider's network, there is no cost other than in their capacity, they'll be able to pass calls around with super low costs. I haven't calculated it exactly, but I guess the cost would be more like half a cent a minute. I should do some arithmetic.
