But Abu Ali Hashem, a Sistani follower and an official of a hallowed Shiite shrine, estimated that half of the neighborhood's Sistani followers were joining in Sadr's protest in the absence of any instruction otherwise from their own leader.

But Sistani has refused to openly support Sadr and has called for peaceful negotiations to the dispute..

However, he has stated, in line with basic koranic teachings, that if attacked, muslims have the right to defend themselves.

Which means that US troops need to obviously be selective in who they shoot at (those holding weapons). And we need to broadcast that ACTIVELY to the residents.

And I'm pretty sure that we've made it well known that if you're seen with a weapon in the streets of Sadr city (or Fallujah), and you're not authorized to have it, then you're an acceptable target.

Better for them to remain in their houses and take no part in assisting Sadr.
