Unlike an NBA coach, a successful college coach has to be a strong recruiter. The lure of coming to Connecticut is that we don't have any local pro sports teams and thus lots of attention is paid to college athletics. Every men's and women's basketball game is broadcast on TV and every game is sold out in advance. Many UConn grads go on to have successful careers in the NBA and WNBA. Success is the best advertisement for selling success. Obviously it wasn't always like that, which makes what UConn did that much more special. I think you'll see similar improvement in the men's football team now that the new stadium is open.

As for UConn itself, when I was college age, to be honest, we all considered it a "safety school." I can't even remember if I applied there. Thanks to the basketball program, the place is busting at the seams with new construction everywhere. UConn now has a very good academic reputation, applications are way up and supposedly it's now the first choice on a lot of lists of where to attend. Hats off to them for making such progress.
