Amid credibility questions, Bush approval rating sinks in Calif

SAN FRANCISCO - Doubts about the credibility of President Bush's statements to the public and poor reviews of his handling of the economy and the war in Iraq have led to a sharp drop in his job approval rating in California, a new poll found.

The California Consumer Confidence Survey found that just 38 percent of adults in the state said they approve of Bush's job performance, while 50 percent said they disapprove. In January, the same survey found 49 percent approved of Bush's job performance and 40 percent disapproved.

The survey of 1,023 California adults was conducted March 29 to April 2 and had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The poll found that Bush's sinking job approval numbers were largely tied to a growing perception that his statements to the public are not believable. Asked if "generally speaking, do you believe that what President Bush tells the American people is true," 48 percent of respondents said no, while about 42 percent said yes.
