Well, we probably should have gotten the UN involved a lot earlier in the process. In any case, what we would have liked is for the resistence to slowly wind down towards the transfer of power on June 30th. But, now it's looking like we might have to significantly increase our firepower to bring it under control, risking a wider war and pissing even more people off. Or we might eventually have to leave, but that will only be after years and years of a war of attrition. Viet Nam taught us that the U.S. doesn't lose wars quickly. What we'll probably do is wait until things are relatively calm and quickly hand over power to an Iraqi government and get the hell out of there (doing so would save some face).
