If you are a great basketball player, you probably choose a school that balances giving you adequate playing time for showing off your skills with having a winning reputation. If you are a top recruit, you are lucky to be there two years, so academic reputation is a moot point. You want an elite coach, like a Calhoun or Boeheim, who you know have reputations as having their kids ready for the pros. This holds true for all sports, not just basketball. If it didn't, then by your argument Duke would be football powerhouse as well. They obviously are not.
