There was an interesting show on PBS.
pbs.org

It documented how the Jesus message changed from Jewish to Gentile. It seemed to be a movement designed to get gentile support for the first uprising (a sort of join the movement now and share in the "chosen people" status). The focus and and mechanisms changed when that failed, and the second uprising began. It took on a life of it's own when the initial leadership was killed off.
