The Chinese have been using methane generated from home soil-water and garbage to provide cooking and heating gas for many centuries.

The systems I work with are scaleable down to a 100-head dairy, but I don't work in the 'home' market as my background is heavy industrial. I would suspect that there are very viable systems that should be listed or referred to in the Mother Earth News, etc.

A little Google time invested in "..methane biogas generation home use anaerobic.." etc., should yield some home-scale results. It is do-able and it is a good idea. The ROI will be extended however. Running all of your available food wastes through your Disposal, and including thoroughly shredded printer paper, News paper, and brown paper bags to the septic system would improve results.

Were I to participate in the design of your system, I would suggest that the methane system be housed is a separate dedicated "..physical plant.." building or building/wood storage unit/garage/misc. where you could locate a biogas-fired water heater. You could then pipe the hot water into the home for radiant heating or to heat exchangers to warm your domestic potable water.

Domestic potable water heat exchange has to involve either double-walled heat exchanger piping or double-walled device techniques to keep it sanitary - should hot water flowing from the biogas water heater/boiler ever cause a leak in the transport piping.

One very good point is that should your pipeline or propane gas source ever be disrupted, you would have the biogas back up to get you through until repairs were made. And, having the biogas system online will keep some attention focused on systems maintenance and energy conservation.

John :-)
