I hope, for our sake, that Kerry told the truth, as he saw it, about Vietnam. In retrospect, there's simply no way for us on the outside to be sure whether he was having a crisis of conscience, or was merely an opportunist.

The smarminess, the fawningness, in theory these could be genuine.
