Taiwan protesters blast 'election shooting fix' 5.10PM, Sat Apr 10 2004 Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Taiwan's capital in protest at the election-eve shooting of President Chen Shui-bian. Blasting horns and blocking off streets, the demonstration is the third in what seems to have become a weekend tradition since Chen's narrow election victory on March 20. Demonstrators believe the shooting, which grazed the Chen's stomach, swung the vote in the President's favour which was won by a mere 0.2 per cent margin. Many of the demonstrators have gone further and suggested the shooting may have been orchestrated by the President Chen. Opposition Presidential candidate Lien Chan joined the protesters and called for an immediate recount. Since his election win, President Chen has kept public appearances and speeches to a minimum but has stamped his ownership over the new Presidential term. itv.com
