They are covering this guy's face in the Internet photos.

Ranting Profs - DISTURBING
By Cori Dauber

By now you have all no doubt seen the video shot by Australian televisiion of (apparently) an American contractor being taken (or held) hostage in Iraq. The man is being held at gun point, and what do the newsies do? Stick microphones in his face.

They certainly should have shot the video. Getting a record of who he was, images of the men he was with, and as much information as he could share may end up saving that man's life.

But then airing it? and sharing it with other networks, none of whom seem shy about airing it?

I find this profoundly disturbing. Remember how we all reacted when the Iraqis aired video of American POWs and al Jazeerah and others picked it up? Does the fact that this man is a civilian change anything? Why? I find it repellant: just another case where they'll air anything they can get away with, turn anything they can into spectacle with no regard to any values whatsoever.

The Fallujah images were newsworthy. They told us something vitally important about our enemy that could only be told through pictures. But this? "A guy is being held hostage: reporters saw him before the insurgents sped off down the road." Why do we need to see it?

Exploitive, that's the word. And I don't care if they are pixellating the face.
