<font color=slateblue>In the 70 years after 1851, when gold was found at Hill End, more than 1.5 million ounces were produced there. That would be worth more than $750 million at today's prices.

Most of that was produced in the first few decades of mining at the town, with fabulous discoveries such as the nugget found on the Holtermann claim in 1872. Weighing 286kg, it contained 3000 ounces of gold.

286kg converts to 9,195 t/oz for that bauble;
3000 oz actual gold content determined to contain,
32.6% pure aka only 7.8 Karat pure.

(less pure than the low end 9kt Au jewellery standard currently retailed in Europe at this time.)
