makes me wonder if the cocaine story is the reason GW never showed up for duty in 1972.

In 1972 George Junior was in a cocaine rehab program in Houston (P.U.L.L. was it's acronym) (George Senior was on the board of directors and in a position to have the records supressed). It was community service work where he went around to the houses of drug offender minorities to give them anti-drug literature (and see his future if he didn't sober up).

He tried to gloss over it in the convention (during a prepared video), where he mentions the experience. He doesn't say that it was the condition to get his cocaine arrest expunged. Soon he was sent back to Midland to escape the Houston cocaine scene.
