Rub your forehead to get into the States

I’m just back from 10 days with our American allies, which was more of a culture shock than ever, owing to their being A Nation At War With Terror (in a way that we — oddly — still aren’t, despite Tony Blair’s best efforts).

At Los Angeles airport, I was fingerprinted and had a biometric photograph taken of my left iris. The fingerprinting was a right carry-on. You place your forefinger on a small square of glass while the immigration clerk taps on her keyboard. Then she snaps: "Wipe it on your forehead, ma’am." What?

"It won’t work unless you pick up some grease on your finger." Yuck! "Wipe it on your forehead, please." I did as I was bid, and rubbed away until my finger was unpleasantly coated with the detritus of an 11-hour flight.

"You’re all set. Next!" In hygiene-obsessed America, I hovered for a minute, expecting her to pass me a disinfectant tissue to clean the glass for the next person. But she didn’t. So the German man behind me had to press his forefinger on to my smears of Teint Lucide in Ivory 01. He looked quite as disconcerted as I felt.
