Just when an alternative like the LP is most needed, it slides ever further into irrelevance.

I agree, and would opine that for our declining status we need only blame ourselves.

Over the last few years, the attendant political philosophies of libertarianism have increasingly been corrupted, and in some instances intentionally misinterpreted, by individuals and groups seeking less to embrace and expand freedom than to further their particular causes, some of which are on balance quite inconsistent with ours.

More than a few statists have chosen to veil their platform behind the 'libertarian' moniker without criticism or correction; for that reason, we should not be surprised that even when our message does get out there, it's often completely misunderstood.

That anyone would even suggest that Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, or Howard Dean were/are libertarians of even the faintest stripe is - or, seems to me - evidence that tightening our act up is sorely required.
