You may be right but there would likely be a civil war with huge bloodshed, with the armed Shiites getting into power as a subset of Iran. Kurds likely to break away, inviting Turkey to attack, etc.

The "say we won" might have been the strategy for VietNam, but I don't think it is the humanitarian thing to do.

I'd offer in private to all the nations and UN, and then publicly, but failing and real acceptance of offer or plan, then I'd basically put military structure in there to provide for a democratic election, disarmament, etc.

Give them the carrot and stick - not just a date. We leave after free elections and we will protect the elections. Anyone who interferes gets decimated.

Bad choices I agree but at least do something, not just criticize - which is what I say to the Kerry camp.
