You were going along just fine until you stumbled here. Bush isn't the first president to be elected without getting a majority of the popular vote. The last one was Kennedy, the first one was (if I recall correctly) Jefferson. That's the way the Founding Fathers set it up. There are good reasons for the Electoral College. It can be changed with a Constitutional amendment, but nobody seems to be pushing one these days. Probably because it would fail, given the fact that a majority of the states have a minority of the population, and you can't change the Constitution via popular vote, either.

If you care to reformulate your thought leaving this bit out, it would be easier for me to respond to it.

As for me, what comes immediately to mind is the Swiss Guard, the elite troops who guard the Pope. In The DaVinci Code, we learned that they don't just carry halberds anymore, but I don't really know to what extent they are actually armed with modern weapons, and how much is fiction.
