Generally mobos have 2 ide connectors. Many feel it's best not to mix cdroms with hard drives on the same ide channel. So if you have only one hard drive, it should be set as primary master on the first IDE channel. The cd rom should be jumpered as master and hooked to the mobo with a different cable to the secondary IDE channel.

If the cd rom must be a slave for some reason, set the jumper to slave and hook it to the same cable as an existing master device. Be sure to connect it to the middle connection on the cable, not the end one which is for the master device.
