I like the whole idea of fractals and mandelbrot sets and chaos theory...that being the repetition of patterns regardless of scale. I think it applies to people. We know that individuals get stuck in a pattern of abusive relationships. It's who they are and what they are comfortable with. I believe that the same thing can happen to populations of people.

There is also the notion that people have the leaders that they choose, regardless of the method of choice (or apparent lack of choice). They have had barbarian leaders because they have either chosen barbarians or tolerated them.
