I think anyone who enters office as a minority president would be smart to do it. (You may remember that Clinton even had a Republican, who was a former critic, serve as secretary of defense in his second term.) How about Bush for Secretary of Education in the fantasy Gore administration (g)? Energy ?

If the public gives a clear mandate to one party, then the point is moot. In that case, the winner has the obligation to put together a team that will enforce the platform of the public's choice. But when a statistical anomaly occurs, as in 2000, the country should be spared the partisan victory swagger. Until we as a nation have the good sense to get rid of this archaic stain on the one-man one-vote principle, and I have very little expectation of that occurring anytime soon, I just hope we can avoid it.
