9:54AM Market sees Fed rate hikes starting in August by Rex Nutting
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- In the wake of strong job growth and retail sales in March, U.S. financial markets are now predicting the Federal Reserve will begin to raise interest rates in August. The federal funds target rate, now at a 46-year low of 1 percent, will likely rise to 1.75 percent by the end of the year, according to fed funds futures contracts at the Chicago Board of Trade. The odds of a rate hike by the end of August rose to 100 percent from 86 percent earlier, based on the price of the August contract. The odds of a third rate hike by December rose from 26 percent to 66 percent after the strong retail sales report.
