I always did install them as soon as I was aware of them...until now.

Windows Update problems: Here's my theory, probably wrong, but I'm offering it anyway. As more and more people are becoming concerned with securing their machines, they are really pounding MS when an update first becomes available. As slow as the download was I should have cancelled and gone back later. We could very well have been getting a corrupted download.

Yesterday I downloaded and installed everything (6 critical updates). Even though ZoneAlarm asked three different times for internet access during the install...(I should have canceled the install the first time), I got a successful install notification page when everything was finished and was prompted to restart. I did and nothing but a black screen appeared. Windows was hung up and I had to use the manual shutdown button. I started back up and was presented with a nice message saying I could not boot. I immediately said oh s**t, now I'm screwed. There was a timer running and so I didn't get to read the whole page but I got a glimpse of a choice to boot to last known good configuration and I choose it just before getting sent into what I assume would have been a loop.

Sigh of relief....XP booted normally. I went to event viewer and was surprised to see no errors. Being hard headed, I went back to Windows Update and the scan showed that I now had 5 new critical updates to install instead of the 6 that I thought I got the first time. This time everything went better, although a little slower than normal. I rebooted successfully this time and all is well.

Lesson learned: wait a few days before installing new updates. Let other people find the bugs.
