They think that by killing Americans in Iraq, they'll make us leave. They don't understand America. Have you even heard of Vietnam? Or was that a different America which withdrew from Vietnam because the body bags were getting a bit too much to bear? Are you aware of the US withdrawal from Somalia after the famous blackhawks down & US soldiers killed? Or the US withdrawal from Lebanon after US Marines were killed in Beirut in some bombings? Maybe you should stop to consider that it is YOU who does "not know America". As with any other rational society, Americans start asking their government why exactly their children are dying, especially when body bags start coming home day after day. By attacking them we will cause them to submit. That's human nature. Am i missing something? Well, yeah, you are missing an understanding of "human nature", not to mention several hundred years of long and depressing history in guerilla warfare and popular resistance against occupiers.
