I think I know how they prepared Bush Jr. for the press conference.

There was a point where a reporter asked Bush why he had to see the 9/11 commission accompanied by Cheney, he gave glib answer. When the reporter tried to follow-up Bush got flustered and cut him off again. Then the interesting thing happened. Instead of looking at the pool of reporters to get the next question he rapidly scanned a seating map that was on his podium and picked a specific reporter by name without looking up until after he named him. (someone from Washington Times). He not only got a softball question but you could see from his eyes that he was reading the entire (and long) answer from the teleprompter. Even so, he almost lost it.

A press conference is one of the milder forms of pressure that come with the office. It's truly frightening.
