Renesas to Raise Flash-Memory Capacity (WSJ)
April 15, 2004

Renesas Technology Corp., a semiconductor joint venture between Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp., will boost its capacity sixfold by the end of March 2006 to produce AND-type flash-memory chips for use in digital cameras and mobile phones. The news comes after Toshiba Corp. and SanDisk Corp. said Tuesday that they would invest a combined ¥270 billion ($2.53 billion) to build a memory-chip manufacturing plant. Renesas expects the global flash-memory market to grow 62% to ¥2.1 trillion by the end of arch 2006 from ¥1.3 trillion, a spokesman said. Separately, Sony Corp. said Wednesday that it raised its monthly output of charge-coupled devices, or CCDs, on the back of continued robust demand for digital electronic appliances.
