Most soldiers passed on band-aid purple hearts.

My father is a WWII vet, who served 10 months of combat on PT boats. He was wounded 3 times.

The first time, his boat was strafed by a Japanese plane, killing 2 and wounding 2 including the sailor who was loading his gun (Oerlikon 20mm). He was hit in the face with shrapnel from an explosion when a round from the plane hit the ammo box on the Oerlikon. His wounds were minor compared to the others so he instructed his commander NOT to put in for a purple heart.

The second time, His PT boat engaged a Japanese destroyer. They had been short on crew and Admiral Kinkade drafted some marines for this mission. They crippled the destroyer but took heavy casualties (7 dead, 4 wounded mostly marines). Just after they launched their last torpedo the PT boat turned to escape. My father was hit in the back with a large shell. According to the Lt commanding the boat, the shell from the destroyer skipped off the water 2 times and then hit my dad in the back he suffered bruised ribs and a cut forehead when he was slammed into his Oerlikon. The shell fell to the deck and rolled off into the sea. Again he refused a purple heart.

The third time, they were surprised by 4 Japanese planes and not all guns were online. There are different stories about what actually happened. What is known is that my father hit one of the planes but was hit 2 times when another plane strafed the boat. This also killed the LT who was helping with my fathers gun. The damaged plane returned and crashed into the PT boat. My father was knocked off the boat and was knocked unconscious.

That’s how he earned his purple heart.

This story, is quite typical, and just a little different than the brave John effin Kerry.
